Right out of the gate, Dinotopia lets you know that it doesn't have much intention of messing around with any sort of interesting plot or mission structure. In the game, you play as Drake, and your task is to defend Dinotopia from a bevy of underwhelming threats. After the killing, Drake and Jacob begin to go their separate ways, with Jacob joining a gang of dinosaur-hating humans called the Outsiders and Drake choosing to take on the role of a guardian of Dinotopia. At the beginning of the game, Drake and Jacob's father is attacked and killed by a rogue Tyrannosaurus while exploring the outer jungles of Dinotopia.

DINOTOPIA MOVIE REVIEW SERIES

The latest addition to the series is Dinotopia: The Sunstone Odyssey, an action adventure game from TDK Mediactive that, for better or worse, tries very hard to capture the atmosphere and style of the Dinotopia books, but for the most part, it just isn't a lot of fun to play.ĭinotopia chronicles the story of a hidden island where dinosaurs and humans live together in harmony.ĭinotopia: The Sunstone Odyssey follows the story of Drake Gemini, his twin brother, Jacob, and their father, who have been stranded on Dinotopia for 10 years. If you've never encountered Dinotopia before, it chronicles the story of a hidden island where humans and dinosaurs have been living together in harmony.

Originating as a series of books, Dinotopia has also been turned into a miniseries, a short-lived TV series, and a game-last year's Dinotopia: The Timestone Pirates for the GBA.

  • Triceratops horridus is by Nobu Tamura, available at BW.jpg. He looks like the ostriches on Disney's Fantasia, but with teeth. Zippaeu appears to be some sort of human-sized Ornithomimid (though they give him the non-existent name Stenosaurus, probably intending the much-smaller Stenonychosaurus, a Troodontid). The major exception is the only dinosaur who has a talking part: Zippaeu. The question of which brother Marion prefers is left unanswered, possibly to maintain sexual tension in the subsequent (and short-lived) television series (which I won't bother watching).įun fact: The king can be seen eating a pitaya several times. Despite some fantastic coincidences, the resolution of the story arcs is satisfying. For the most part the special effects are impressive for a television movie, especially Waterfall City and the dinosaurs the costumes, on the other hand, are what you'd expect from a low-budget production like Xena: Warrior Princess or Ever After. David Thewlis, who plays the villain, looks more snaggletoothed and mullet-y than he did in the Harry Potter series. His character is quite cheesy and poorly done. One of the main characters, David Scott is played by Wentworth Miller, of Prison Break fame. Some of their behavior (drinking alcohol, swearing) is not befitting a movie for children. The main characters are supposed to be teenagers, but both actors are obviously in their twenties. My verdict: The series was on the low end of okay. And, as it turns out, things are not ideal in Dinotopia-there exist villains, restrictive rules, hypocrisy, and incompetent unelected leaders. So it is not without irony that the title Dinotopia (Δεινοτοπία in Greek ) actually means "terrible place" or "land of suffering", not "utopian land of the dinosaurs" (which is what we're meant to think). But the real result there (as it would be here) is a completely ridiculous society. I can't say for the books (though I suspect it is so), but in the miniseries some of the practices of Dinotopia are presented as obviously superior to the way we do things in the real world, so we must all be idiots for not doing them here: vegetarianism, government distribution of food, absolute pacifism, etc. I don't remember the plot at all, but the concept of domesticating dinosaurs was (to my young mind) brilliant and my sense of awe while reading the book has stuck with me. It was large with lavish paintings of people and dinosaurs coexisting. The only exposure I had to Dinotopia before watching this miniseries, by Hallmark Entertainment, was a book my Great Grandma had.
